7th Grade Extends Exploration

two students using a magnifying glass to observe worms in compost

The 7th graders had a great time during our worm composting workshop on Friday. City Growers did a great job of drawing out students’ prior knowledge and helping them make connections between the topic of worm composting and their daily lives. Students were totally engaged and excited to handle and observe the worms. I heard one student exclaim “This was the best class ever!” on his way out the door. A number of students brought in fruit and vegetable scraps on Monday and were excited to share them with the worms. We are looking forward to visiting the farm in April and June and bringing our compost with us to help fertilize the plants! — Madelyn Moyer, 7th Grade Science Teacher

As part of their Spring Exploration Unit, 7th graders will ask in June, “Are you what you eat?” Some of their teachers met in the fall with the educators at City Growers, the educational nonprofit that works with the Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm, to talk about opportunities to prepare for and extend that Exploration Unit this winter and spring. They started with compost workshops this past week as part of their science class — more visits and discussions yet to come!
