7th graders Martine and Lulu made organic waffles with organic coconut oil, almond milk, strawberry jam, as part of a project to make an organic meal for less than $10.
During our 7th grade Explorations series learning about the ways that food connects and divides us, we went on four different trips in Brooklyn and Manhattan (such as the Museum Of Food and Drink in Williamsburg and the Farmer’s Market in Union Square) that helped us expand our knowledge of food insecurity, food waste, food economics, food distribution and other food related topics. I learned that although America is one of the richest countries in the world, 1 out of 2 kids suffer from food insecurity. This made me realize that we take our access to food for granted and also that there are many people and organizations working hard to make sure their kids and families have something to eat each night. These programs include food drives, food pantries, soup kitchens, Farmer’s Markets, and the work of food activists.
