We hope that you are all well and have not been greatly affected by the recent storms. It is hard to believe that we will be welcoming students back into the building on Monday. It is long overdue. The staff is excited; they have been working tirelessly to move furniture, prepare their classrooms, and plan engaging activities for the students for the first couple days of school. We are ready to see/hear our hallways full of students, chatter, and laughter!
As a community, we recognize that students (and families/guardians) may be apprehensive about returning to the school building, especially our incoming 6th graders. We wanted to take a few moments to make you and your child(ren) more aware of the school routines and what to expect the first few days of school. We hope that this information may help to lessen the “first day of school anxiety” some may be experiencing.

What to Expect the First Few Days
School Hours:
Our school hours are 8:20 AM to 2:40 PM. Students are expected to be in their first period class by 8:25 AM prepared for instruction. We recommend students arrive no later than 8:15.
Arrival:
We will be entering through the main school entrance on the walkway off Johnson Street/Tech Place for morning arrival. Students may start to enter the school building at 7:45 AM. While waiting to enter, students should line-up against the fence standing three feet apart. Masks should be worn, covering the mouth and nose. All students will need to complete the HEALTH SURVEY everyday before entering the school building. Please help us save trees; here’s instructions on how to place the shortcut link on your child’s phone. Upon entering the building, students will need to take their temperature and go through the scanning machines. It is helpful if students remove any belts, phones, or coins from their pockets. Glass bottles and metal forks are not permitted in school.
Students will be directed to the large gym on the first floor. Here, they will be guided by our staff to sit three feet apart from each other. At around 8:15 AM, students will be guided to go upstairs utilizing the stairwell that is designated for only the middle school (Staff will be present downstairs the first day of school to guide the students upstairs). Children who enter the building after the gym is cleared will be advised to go straight upstairs.
Safety Protocols Once in the Building:
Students are expected to remain 3 feet apart as they walk up the stairs in a single file. They are to line-up outside of their first period classroom (or the room where their locker is located). There will be markings on the floor to show where they should line-up. Masks should be worn properly at all times and three feet distance maintained. When it is time for class to begin, the teacher will greet the students at the door. Students will enter, cleaning their hands with sanitizer. Students should go straight to their seats, which have been strategically placed to fulfill the 3 feet distance mandate. Students should not be sharing materials. When it is necessary, such as the case with lab materials, students will be provided with sanitizing wipes to clean the materials afterwards.
Each classroom will follow the mandated protocols:
Some windows will be open
- Some windows will be open
- Air conditioners will be on (during the appropriate seasons)
- The door will be propped open
- Two air purifiers will be present
- Desks will be configured to allow students to sit 3 feet apart
- The number of people present will be within the capacity limit
Students will transition to their classrooms this school year. They are expected to remain three feet apart and not congregate in the hallway. Staff will be present by their doorways and within the hall to ensure students are moving safely to their next class in a single file. Our current 6th and 7th graders have not experienced transitioning yet. Therefore, we have decided to slowly implement this for each grade. 8th grade will begin transitioning to their classes on Monday. 7th grade will begin on Tuesday, and 6th grade will do it on Wednesday. When not transitioning, the teachers will move between the classrooms.
Dismissal:
Students are staggered for dismissal at 2:40. They use the designated MS stairway and exit on Tillary Street. They self-dismiss; staff will not be walking them downstairs (except for the first day of school). If students attend CCM, our after school program, they will be given guidance as to where to go at dismissal. (Please reach out to CCM regarding registration and their start date.)
Lunch:
Our students are walked by staff members down to the cafeteria for lunch. 6th and 7th graders will eat in the cafeteria first while the 8th grade has recess in the gym. The lunchroom will look different this school year. More tables will be present. Students will be distanced from each other; only one side of the table will be utilized. Students are to remove their mask while eating and then wear it again as soon as they are finished. (Directions will be carefully reviewed with students during the first lunch period).
Out-lunch will resume this school year. 8th grade may start out-lunch on Monday. 7th grade may begin on Tuesday. 6th grade may participate on Wednesday. On our website, find all the guidelines and PERMISSION SLIP FOR OUT-LUNCH. Parents/guardians must complete the form in order for students to participate in out-lunch.
Important Forms:
Please note that there are several important FORMS to be completed electronically on the school website. It is IMPORTANT TO COMPLETE THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, preferably before school starts, especially the EMERGENCY CONTACT FORM and the WALKING TRIP FORM.
ALL FORMS WILL BE DIGITAL THIS YEAR. NO PAPER VERSIONS WILL BE SENT HOME.
Phone Policy:
Students may not use their phones within the school building. Phones should be turned off when they enter the building and put away. If you need to speak with your child, please call the main office 718-875-1021. There are specific guidelines regarding cell phones in the school. Please review the MS915 Cell Phone Policy which is also included the STUDENT HANDBOOK. Teachers will be sharing the cell phone policy with students on the first day of school.
What Can You Expect the First Few Days of School?
- Students will be engaging in “Welcome Day” activities on Monday and Tuesday. These activities will include community building, a school tour, and a review of safety guidelines and school protocols. On Wednesday, 9/15, students will participate in some activities to celebrate our school “915.” Friday will be a typical class schedule.
- Students do NOT need to bring all of their supplies to school on the first day. They should have a notebook and a pen (and lunch if needed). All supplies should be present by Wednesday. If you purchased supplies through the PTA fundraiser, they arrived at the school today and will be distributed throughout the week.
- Students should begin to bring a combination lock to school for their lockers. No personal items should be left in a locker unless it has a workable lock. Students are expected to share their combination with the staff member in the selected classroom. Please help your child practice opening the lock. It can be challenging for first-timers!
- We suggest students bring a water bottle to school. For safety reasons, we would like to limit the usage of the water fountains.
- Students will not receive their official class schedule until Tuesday. You will be emailed your child’s group for the welcome days by the end of the day.
- Last year, we allowed students to bring their own computers to school because we had distributed all of our resources to students for remote learning. We ask students who borrowed a computer either from the DOE or MS 915 to return them during the first week of school. This will help us to assess our resources. We will let parents/guardians know if students will be allowed to use personal computers at school this year.

- Qué se puede esperar durante los primeros días de clases?
Horario Escolar:
Nuestro horario escolar es de 8:20 a. m. a 2:40 p.m. Se espera que los estudiantes estén en su clase de primer período a las 8:25 a. m. preparados para la enseñanza. Recomendamos que los estudiantes lleguen a más tardar a las 8:15.
Llegada:
Entraremos por la entrada principal de la escuela en pasaje entre las calles Johnson y Tillary para la llegada por la mañana. Los(as) estudiantes pueden comenzar a ingresar al edificio de la escuela a las 7:45 a. m. Mientras esperan para entrar, los(as) estudiantes deben alinearse contra la cerca que a tres pies de distancia. Se deben usar mascarillas que cubran la boca y la nariz. Todos los estudiantes deberán completar la ENCUESTA DE SALUD todos los días antes de ingresar a la escuela. Ayúdenos a salvar árboles colocando el enlace de acceso directo en el teléfono de su hijo(a) siguiendo estas indicaciones. Los(as) estudiantes pasarán al gimnasio en el primer piso y nuestro personal les ayudarán a sentarse a tres pies de distancia. Alrededor de las 8:15 a. m. guiaremos a los(as) estudiantes a subir las escaleras que estás designadas solo para la escuela intermedia. Los(as) estudiantes que lleguen después de que hayamos subido tendrán que pasar directamente a las escaleras asignadas a nuestra escuela.
Protocolos de seguridad una vez dentro del edificio:
Se espera que los(as) estudiantes permanezcan a 3 pies de distancia mientras suban en fila las escaleras. Deben alinearse fuera de su aula del primer período (o el salón donde se encuentra su casillero). Habrá marcas en el piso para mostrar dónde deben alinearse. Las mascarillas deben usarse correctamente en todo momento y mantenerse a una distancia de tres pies. Cuando llegue el momento de comenzar la clase, el(la) maestro(a) saludará a los estudiantes en la puerta para que entren y se limpien las manos con desinfectante. Los estudiantes deben ir directamente a sus asientos, que han sido colocados estratégicamente para cumplir con la norma de distanciamiento de 3 pies. Los(as) estudiantes no deben compartir útiles. Cuando sea necesario, como en el caso de los materiales de laboratorio, los estudiantes recibirán toallitas desinfectantes para limpiar los materiales después de usarlos.
Cada aula seguirá los protocolos establecidos:
- Algunas ventanas estarán abiertas.
- Los aires acondicionados estarán prendidos (durante las temporadas apropiadas).
- La puerta estará abierta.
- Habrá dos purificadores de aire.
- Los escritorios se configurarán para permitir que los estudiantes se sienten a 3 pies de distancia.
- El número de personas presentes estará dentro del límite de capacidad.
Este año escolar los(as) estudiantes irán de salón en salón. Se espera que permanezcan a tres pies de distancia y no se congreguen en el pasillo. El personal estará presente en sus puertas y dentro del salón para garantizar que los estudiantes se muevan en fila de manera segura a su próxima clase. Los estudiantes de 6.º y 7.º grado aún no tienen experiencia con la transición, por lo tanto, hemos decidido implementarla gradualmente para cada grado. Los(as) estudiantes de 8.º grado comenzarán la transición a sus clases el lunes. 7.º grado comenzará el martes, y 6º grado lo hará el miércoles. Cuando no haya transición, los(as) maestros(as) serán los que cambien de salón.
Salida:
Los(as) estudiantes bajarán en grupos a hora de la salida a las 2:40 usando las escaleras designada a nuestra escuela y saldrán por la calle Tillary. Bajarán solos(as) y el personal no los acompañarán, excepto el primer día de clases. Si los estudiantes asisten al programa extraescolar de CCM, entonces se les informará sobre a dónde ir a la hora de la salida. (Comuníquense con CCM para averiguar cómo inscribirse y la fecha que comienza su programa).
Almuerzo:
Miembros del personal acompañan a los(as) estudiantes al comedor para la hora del almuerzo. Los(as) estudiantes de 6.º y 7.º grado comerán en el comedor primero, mientras que los(as) de 8.º grado tendrán recreo en el gimnasio. El comedor se verá diferente este año escolar porque habrá más mesas. Los(as) estudiantes estarán distanciados entre sí y solo se utilizará un lado de la mesa. Los(as) estudiantes deben quitarse las mascarillas mientras comen y tendrán que ponérselas tan pronto como terminen. (Les recordaremos a los(as) estudiantes cuáles son las instrucciones durante el primer período de almuerzo).
Podrán salir a almorzar de nuevo este año escolar. Los de 8.º grado podrán comenzar el almuerzo el lunes, los de 7.º grado podrán comenzar el martes y los de 6.º grado podrán empezar el miércoles. Todas las pautas y EL PERMISO PARA SALIR DURANTE EL ALMUERZO se pueden encontrar en el sitio web de nuestra escuela. Los padres, madres o tutores deben completar el formulario para que los estudiantes puedan salir durante la hora del almuerzo.
Formularios Importantes:
Tengan en cuenta que hay varios FORMULARIOS importantes que tienen que completar electrónicamente en el sitio web de la escuela. Es muy IMPORTANTE COMPLETARLOS LO ANTES POSIBLE, preferiblemente antes de que comiencen las clases, especialmente el FORMULARIO DE CONTACTO DE EMERGENCIA y el FORMULARIO PARA SALIR A EXCURSIONES.
TODOS LOS FORMULARIOS SERÁN DIGITALES ESTE AÑO Y NO SE ENVIARÁN VERSIONES IMPRESAS A CASA.
Reglas para el uso de teléfonos:
Los(as) estudiantes no pueden usar sus teléfonos en la escuela. Los teléfonos deben apagarse cuando ingresen al edificio y ponerlos es sus mochilas. Si ustedes necesitan hablar con sus hijos(as), llamen a la oficina principal al 718-875-1021. Existen pautas específicas con respecto a los teléfonos celulares en la escuela y las pueden leer en el MANUAL DEL ESTUDIANTE. Los maestros y maestras compartirán las reglas para el uso de los teléfonos celulares con los estudiantes el primer día de clases.
¿Qué se puede esperar durante los primeros días de clases?
- Los estudiantes participarán en actividades del “Día de Bienvenida” el lunes y el martes. Estas actividades incluirán la creación de sentido de comunidad, un recorrido de la escuela y una revisión de las pautas de seguridad y los protocolos escolares. El miércoles, 15 de septiembre, los estudiantes participarán en algunas actividades para celebrar nuestra escuela “915”. El viernes será un horario habitual de clases.
- Los(as) estudiantes NO necesitan traer todos sus útiles a la escuela el primer día. Deben tener un cuaderno y un bolígrafo (y almuerzo si es necesario). Tendrán que traer todos los útiles antes del miércoles. Si compró los útiles a través de la recaudación de fondos de la PTA, llegaron a la escuela hoy y se distribuirán durante toda la semana.
- Los(as) estudiantes deben comenzar a traer un candado con combinación a la escuela para sus casilleros. No se deben dejar artículos personales en un casillero a menos que tenga un candado que funcione. Se espera que los(as) estudiantes compartan su combinación con el miembro del personal del alón. Por favor, ayude a su hijo(a) a practicar a abrir y cerrar el candado. ¡Puede ser un desafío para los primerizos!
- Sugerimos que los estudiantes traigan una botella de agua a la escuela. Por razones de seguridad, nos gustaría limitar el uso de las fuentes de agua.
- Los estudiantes no recibirán su horario oficial de clases hasta el martes. Se le enviará un correo electrónico al grupo de su hijo(a) para los días de bienvenida al final del día.
- El año pasado, permitimos que los estudiantes trajeran sus propias computadoras a la escuela porque habíamos distribuido todos nuestros dispositivos a los estudiantes para el aprendizaje a distancia. Pedimos a los estudiantes que tomaron prestada una computadora, ya sea del Departamento de Educación o de la escuela 915, que la devuelvan durante la primera semana de clases.
