Thanks to a new art studio and a staff committed to supporting students’ self-expression, students experience a hands-on studio art class multiple times per week, in which they have the opportunity to study and create art across various media. The class is run as a supportive community in which risk-taking and exploration are encouraged.
In 6th grade, students study Introduction to Art, in which they focus on thoughtful craftsmanship. Students learn how to use colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, as well as explore 3-dimensional building and collage. They will begin to learn about artists and how to have a student-led critique, and will develop their art vocabulary. In 7th grade Advanced Art, students continue to explore mediums through 3D building, collage, still life, figure and observational drawing. Students will learn more about the importance of process, planning and change, and will contiue to learn about artists along the way. The 8th grade Art in History curriculum is an overview of art, artists and movements beginning with the High Renaissance and ending with POP and Street Art. Students will enjoy free choice projects, in which they choose a medium and create artworks inspired by their art history learning.
Each school year ends with a schoolwide art show, showcasing all student work.
