El Dia De Los Muertos is the day Mexicans celebrate the dead. To celebrate at MS8, 8th grade Spanish classes did both written and art projects then celebrated with a party. We each had to write 20 sentences in Spanish about a dead celebrity or family member who had passed. I chose Marilyn Monroe for mine. Our art projects, whether they be a drawing or a 3D presentation, tied into our sentences. I made an Ofrenda for Marilyn. An Ofrenda is a memorial for the person who has passed away and typically includes las Velas (candles), los flores (flowers), el pan de muertos (a special bread they make in Mexico), la picture (a picture of the person), and El papel picado (paper cutouts strung together) along with other items related to the person. My classmates made drawings of their person and other tiny memorials.
For our celebration, the class was split in two with half eating delicious Chipotle burritos and chips and guacamole from Rocco’s tacos while the other half made Las Calaveras De Chocolate, chocolate skulls.
Everyone got a chocolate skull and decorated them with icing. People got really creative with their designs and they tasted amazing too! While decorating our skulls, we watched a bunch of short cartoons about El Dia De Los Muertos. We all had so much fun and can’t wait to celebrate again next year!
