For our final 7th grade exploration we focused on the big question “How does food connect and divide us?” The teachers ran workshops on topics such as food activism, GMOs and the history of processed food, and food access. One of our favorite field trips was going to the Added-Value Red Hook Community Farm. During the visit we tried some of the produce including raspberries and garlic scape. Urban farm relies on volunteer support, including a Youth Empowerment Program, to keep it running so it really built up our community to help out. The trip also showed us the many ways that food connects us – the food grown here is sold both at the Red Hook Farm Stand and the Red Hook CSA as well as donated to local homeless shelters.
