This Saturday, I was a part of a group of eighth and seventh graders who joined in a citywide competition, representing MS 8 for the first time among 32 schools who competed. We participated in events such as Reach for The Stars, an astronomy test; Food Science, in which we had to measure the calories in food; and Fast Facts, a timed test of random scientific facts. Although it is very difficult for a school like ours that is new to the competition to win a medal, two members of our team took home a fifth-place medal in the Herpetology event, dedicated to the study of reptiles. The award made us one of the only two new schools to win a medal out of the six new schools that were added this year. We are excited to continue our Science Olympiad program for students next year who may be interested.
Science Olympiad is a great opportunity for any student seeking to learn more about science. Science is a skill we need all through life, especially if one is looking to have a career in science, but even if you are not, Science Olympiad is an amazing place for creative minds. While preparing for the competition, I learned a lot, while having fun with my team. The competition is an outlet for students who like to compete, learn, and have fun. Our coach, who is our math teacher Ms. Barth-Werb, helped us build towers, planes, and hovercrafts as well as encouraging us to learn about our events as much as possible. Although we wish that we would have won even more medals, the competition was really fun, from exploring the halls to competing to the award ceremony. I hope that at the competition next year, we see many new faces who are ready to learn about science.
